  1. I would characterize the townspeople as closed minded and judgemental because when Mr. Hooper, minister, came in with a black veil over his face they immediately talked about him judging him and calling him a sinner when they are sinners as well. The theme of this story is that not all things are evil, some things are symbolic statements.

  2. The townspeople are very judgemental, because there minster is wearing a black veil. They aren't understanding why is he coming in the church dressed in all black with a black veil on covering everything from his nose up. They don't understand the symbolic meaning behind why he is wearing what he has on. That symbolic meaning leads me to theme of the story, which is embrace the fact that you sin, no one is perfect we all have made mistakes and you can wear this veil to accept the fact that you are a sinner. In the passage he says "If I hide my face for sorrow, there is cause enough," he merely replied; "and if I cove it for the secret sin, what mortal might not do the same?". These people are judging him for walking around showing that he is a sinner and he has no problem telling everyone that because he is human.
