Pit and the Pendulum Discussion

Per the norm, if you didn't participate in today's discussion, you must put your responses here to today's discussion questions:
  • In lines 224-260, determine how the restoration of the narrator’s ability to see his prison changes his emotions about his prison.
  • What effect does the narrator’s description of the pendulum’s movement have on the narrator? What does it have on the reader?
  • How does Poe build suspense in this story? Describe how his use of figurative language and structure help create a sense of suspense in the reader.

  1. Andrew:(1st question) Changes in his emotions of his prison happened because unlike everybody else that was in his position he was sent to the pit, and not hung, so I would say that gave him some hope.
(2nd question) The narrator's description of the pendulum's movement made the narrator feel as if the pit was getting smaller, but in reality I would say the narrator was starting to lose his mind, because the pit was not getting smaller.
(3rd question) The author build suspense by continuously putting the narrator through different experiences and making the reader very anxious yet nervous about what was gonna happen to the narrator

  2. 1. The changes in his emotions really gives you that look to be surprised. The narrator was in the pit and could have easily given up and died at the bottom but he didn't, he had faith in himself.

    2. The narrator felt as though the pendulum was getting smaller as if he were hallucinating, so therefore he was kind of losing his train of thoughts but soon got himself together.

    3. Mr. Poe builds suspense in this story by having a character hallucinate, almost getting killed by a giant knife swinging back and forth, and the setting is a pit, deep down in the darkness.

  3. 1. He was really shocked because it was a new experience for him and didn't expect such.
    2. The narrator felt like the pendulum was getting smaller and starting to lose his mind.
    3. Poe builds suspense by torturing the main character and making the readers feel hopeless but at the end the general saved the narrator.
